Creating A Safe Environment
The safety and protection of children are paramount at Shawon Christian Children’s Ministry. We are committed to creating environments where children can learn, grow, and play without fear. Our Child Protection and Safeguarding initiatives include:
Sports and games – This is that part of the physical development of the children as they interact with others in a healthy way. During the sports and games session the children improve their motor skills, coordination, balance, and overall physical fitness. They also learn how to work together as teams. They also build their social skills during these sessions.
We witness more collaboration, communication, and friendship-building amongst the children. All the sports and games are child friendly and age graded like sack race, rope jumping, treasure hunt, the musical chairs, obstacle course game, egg delivery, scrabble, puzzles and riddles and many others. We witness children developing self – awareness, self-discipline, and emotional regulation. Children learn to win with grace, lose with dignity, and respect others not forgetting the sportsmanship that grows with time. It is fun and a joy to see all the laughter on the field and off the field creating memorable experiences! It has been said that, “Play is children’s food.”
Informal discussion – The Informal discussion sessions are held amongst the children and later with the adults. The children appreciate these moments as they have an opportunity to express themselves on matters that pertain to their welfare. During these sessions the children develop their communication skills especially the verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and articulation. The children’s confidence is built knowing that actually they are heard and contribute to their development positively. Some of the issues that the children have raised include child abuse and neglect, this is a matter that needs our attention as adults while raising this generation.
Children have been encouraged to express themselves, share thoughts, and feel heard. This too prepares the children for real-life conversations as they discuss amongst themselves and later with the adults. Children have learnt from one another and this strengthens their unity and cooperation with one another as they also empathize with others and support one another. By engaging in informal discussions, children develop essential skills, build relationships, and become effective communicators, preparing them for success in all areas of life.
Guidance and counselling – Guidance and counseling has a very positive impact on children’s lives. These sessions have provided a safe space for children to express and manage their emotions, helping them develop emotional intelligence and well-being. This has been done in the schools, churches and community where we have witnessed that the children involved have built their confidence, self-worth, and a positive self-image, leading to better relationships and academic performance. The children have also learnt how to solve different problems and to deal with challenges that come their way. Living purposefully has been encouraged, goal setting and time management addressed. The children social skills are developed such as communication, empathy, and conflict resolution, leading to stronger friendships and relationships.
The parents/ guardians too have been part of the sessions and this has strengthened the family relationships and communication. As a result of these sessions children have learnt to take ownership of their choices, actions, and decisions, promoting autonomy and self-advocacy. Guidance and counseling are essential tools to help children navigate life’s challenges and reach their full potential.
Child protection and safeguarding – Child protection and safeguarding is vital in our children’s ministry to keep children safe and protected from harm, abuse, and neglect, by providing a safe environment for growth and development. In this case we ensure that prevention of harm is done by identifying and mitigates risks, preventing physical, emotional, and psychological harm. This is done by educating the children, parents, children workers and community members about child protection.
We also participate in early Intervention to address abuse issues by promoting timely support. We encourage children to speak up (voice) empowering them to express concerns and receive help when needed. Communities learn about child protection, promoting a culture of safeguarding and collective responsibility. As a result of these sessions trust between children, caregivers, and authorities is established, encouraging open communication. By prioritizing child protection and safeguarding, we create a safer, more supportive environment for children to grow and thrive.
Music, Dance and Drama – Children engage in music, dance, and drama activities that have a profound impact on their physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Through music the children’s memory and language skills improve as they remember melodies, rhythms and words. They are also able express their emotions and ideas through music and their social skills and unity get better.
While through dance, the children improve their balance, coordination, and overall physical fitness. It also enhances creativity and self-expression. Dance introduces and helps children appreciate diverse cultures and traditions. Drama develops the children’s communication and public speaking skills as children express themselves effectively and confidently.
Children overcome shyness and build self-assurance and they are able to work better in teams through the developed social skills, cooperation, and mutual support. We witness confident, creative and good team members as a result of these activities. These children gain problem-solving skills, enhance their emotional intelligence and empathy. By engaging in music, dance, and drama activities, children develop a wide range of skills that benefit them throughout their lives as they transform generations to the glory of God.
